(May 24, 2019 - Toronto, ON) – Award-winning multi-instrumentalist Kevin Hearnreleases the second single and video “The Silent Collapse” from with his widely-anticipated new solo offering, Calm and Cents, which will be available on vinyl, disc, and digitally on June 14via his Celery Music imprint. There’s a significant visual component to Calm and Cents. “The Silent Collapse” video directed and animated by Sonia Beckwith Cole is abstract, exploring the extinction of countless species through unique animations based on Hearn’s own drawings. Watch HEREand stream HERE.

His first single “The Chemical Valley” HEREis dedicated to the people of Aamjiwnaang First Nation, who have seen their traditional territory in Southern Ontario transform into one of Canada’s most polluted, causing unimaginable and undeserved hardships. The self-produced predominantly-instrumental collection on Calm and Centsfeatures sprawling soundscapes created and captured at Hearn’s secluded studio in Northern Ontario – half in the summer, half in the spring – with Hugh Marsh (strings), Chris Gartner (bass), JUNO Award-winning producer Gavin Brown (percussion and programming), and a few special guests. The stunning album is inspired by our natural world, shifting seamlessly between celebrations of its ethereal beauty and the troubling urgency of what we, as humans, are doing to it. “I didn’t want to get on a soapbox, necessarily,” Hearn says about his theme, “but rather just relay those feelings through music.”

Alongside the new album, Hearn will re-release his entire catalogue, which dates back to 1997 (his solo debut, Mothball Mint) and includes Cloud Maintenance (2011), Days in Frames(2014), as well as albums with his longtime band and collaborators Thinbuckle:H-Wing(2011), Night Light(2004), The Miracle Mile(2006) and Havana Winter (2009). His catalogue also includes a first time digital release of Record Store Day Canada project Kevin Hearn & Friends Present: The Superhero Suite. The unique collection features a well-known and eclectic cast of close friends and musical heroes performing an array of superhero-inspired songs, including Barenaked Ladies, Violent Femmes, and Colin Hay covering the Batmantheme from the classic ‘60s TV series. The initial limited-edition vinyl release, from which all the proceeds were donated to MusiCounts to support music education in Canada, sold out nationwide and debuted on the Nielson Chart at Number 7.

“Some of these projects have been in the works for a few years, and it seems the universe just sort of decided that they all needed to come out this year,” Hearn shares – and that doesn’t faze him in the least. He’s also the subject of a documentary There Are No Fakes, a riveting deep dive into the tragic history of indigenous art forgery and exploitation, for which he composed the score. The worldwide premiere screenings in Toronto sold out, leading up to the national theatrical release in June.

A gifted composer, in-demand collaborator, and ever-active musical force with zero interest in creative stagnancy, Hearn cut his teeth collaborating with the likes of Look People, Corky and the Juice Pigs, and revered art-rock outfit Rheostatics before formally joining Barenaked Ladies in 1995. As the group’s profile swelled in the ensuing years, he explored new sonic ground with a series of innovative and imaginative solo albums. One of the most respected and sought-after Toronto musicians of the past 25 years, Hearn’s projects always attract brilliant collaborators including Ron Sexsmith, Dan Hill, Michael Ray of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Carole Pope, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Alan Doyle, The Persuasions, Violent Femmes, Colin Hay and drummer Rob Kloet (the Nits). One of his most rewarding creative and personal relationships of all was with the legendary Lou Reed, for whom Hearn acted as musical director and keyboardist from 2007 until his passing in 2013. Muses Hearn, “I like connecting with people that have an adventurous musical spirit – who are imaginative and still approach music with a sense of wonder.” Hearn was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2018 as part of Barenaked Ladies.

Record Store Day is a day that celebrates independent record stores all over the world with parties, in-store performances and special releases. It’s a day that spans genres and unites music lovers of all ages. There’s a palpable sense of camaraderie in those early morning lines, and an air of anxious excitement as fans gather to celebrate the place where they might be walking out with the record they came in for, and maybe with something totally new, too.

About MusiCounts
MusiCounts, Canada's music education charity associated with CARAS and the JUNO Awards, is keeping music alive across Canada by putting musical instruments into the hands of children that need them most. MusiCounts' mission is to ensure that children and youth in Canada have access to music programs through their schools and communities. MusiCounts celebrates musical excellence and achieves its mission through its Band Aid Program, the MusiCounts TD Community Music Program, the MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award, MusiCounts Inspired Minds Ambassador Award, Scholarships and other music education initiatives. MusiCounts is funded by many of Canada's most dedicated individuals, events, and corporate citizens. Since 1997 MusiCounts has awarded nearly $12,000,000 in support of music education in Canada. These funds have benefitted 1,200 schools and communities, supported over 350 post-secondary music program graduates, and honoured 13 extraordinary music teachers and two MusiCounts ambassadors.www.musicounts.ca

Hello friends -

I hope you are all having a lovely 2015 so far.

I am writing today to give you a bit of news: I recently learned that I have a serious health issue which will leave me “on the bench” for a few months starting this month.

In my absence, The Rock Boat cruise and other shows with Barenaked Ladies will go on as scheduled with Maury LaFoy filling in for me. Hopefully my recovery will be speedy and I'll be back on the road soon.

I will miss seeing you all and I apologize for the surprise.

I look forward to seeing you all again a little ways down the road.

Please send good vibes my way, and see you soon.

Those who take advantage of the iTunes pre-order on November 11, 2014 will receive an instant grat track of the infectious lead single “Gallerina” which premieres at Exclaim! today here. See below for full track listing.

Hearn’s seventh album is sonically stunning, piano-driven, hauntingly melodic pop resplendent in space-age synths and ukuleles, and as grounded in the everyday as it is fascinated with the otherworldly. That’s true lyrically as well; Hearn describes the songs as being about “love, loss, life, death and renewal, with brief glimpses of the supernatural and the occasional darkly humorous observation.”

Hearn is best known as a multi-instrumentalist from Barenaked Ladies, the multi-platinum selling band he’s played with for almost two decades now. One of the most respected Toronto musicians of the past 25 years, Hearn’s solo albums always attract equally brilliant collaborators: here, they include singer/songwriters Ron Sexsmith and Dan Hill, drummer Rob Kloet (the Nits), Joan as Policewoman, and producer Gavin Brown (Metric, Tragically Hip, Sarah Harmer), not to mention his 22-year-relationship with the rhythm section of Chris Gartner and Great Bob Scott. The LP is also produced by Brown and mixed by Tom Elmhirst (Amy Winehouse, Adele). The ever-modest Hearn rarely asks for favours; people insist on granting them. Violinist Hugh Marsh (Bruce Cockburn, Mary Margaret O’Hara) happened to be visiting the studio where Hearn was recording; intrigued, he ended up spending 10 hours in the studio, playing on almost every track on Days In Frames.

One of Hearn’s closest relationships, both musical and personal, was with the late, great Lou Reed, for whom Hearn acted as keyboardist and musical director from 2007 up until his passing in 2013. Hearn assembled his friends from
Reed’s band — bassist Fernando Saunders, drummer Tony “Thunder” Smith and guitarists Mike Rathke and Aram Bajakian — to play on this album. Several of those musicians play on a song that Hearn wrote about spending time with Reed in the hospital, “Floating.” “Floating, but my heart’s still beating,” sings Hearn, in an upbeat pop waltz, one defying expectations that a song about death has to be sad and morbid. Reed knew a thing or two about cutting through dark situations with gallows humour; Hearn sings: “Things get funny when your eyesight goes / Mistaking your fingers for your toes,” a lyric Reed actually contributed to the song.

The songs on Days In Frames were written in Hearn’s Toronto home as well as Muskoka, ON, Paris, Tofino, B.C., and Cape Dorset on Baffin Island in Canada’s Arctic; he visited the latter in June 2014, a trip he describes as a “life-changing experience.” A longtime patron of Inuit art, Hearn was invited by the Dorset Fine Arts studio, home to some of his favourite artists, such as Shuvinai Ashoona, who painted a guitar for him; Hearn dedicates “Midnight Sun” to her. His relationship with art also informs Days In Frames’ first single, “Gallerina,” sung from the perspective of a painting infatuated with a gallery worker—it’s not a tale of unrequited love, exactly, but it does illustrate Hearn’s unique outlook.

Though Hearn has contributed songs to Barenaked Ladies’ albums in the past 10 years, the songs on his solo records are much more personal, both in subject matter and musical exploration. “It’s fun for me to make music that doesn’t have to fit a certain criteria, whether it be regarding the style or sound, or who is playing it,” he says. “I’m inspired by the works of artists such as David Lynch and Sun Ra, whereas going in that direction with Barenaked Ladies might not make sense. It all finds a home in the proper place. When I make my own records, I can follow my heart and curiosity.” More tour dates will be announced when available.
